Graham Doerg to take back the new waters on why companies need to talk about mental health issues

Who are you and what is your role with New Waters Recovery?

I’m Graham Dorge. I’m the CEO of a company New water recovery.

What is your relationship to rehabilitation and sobriety?

I was dealing with my own issues, specifically with alcohol. I decided to be vigilant and succeeded in doing so. I’ve been sober since 2008.

When I was getting treatment, I realized that they did an excellent job of helping me get through it. They saved my life and I couldn’t thank them enough. It inspired me to give back and without my knowledge, it ended up being more than just a life changing event.

I decided to do my part in helping people become sober, too. Having a career was one of the best things I’ve ever done. Believe it or not, my wife Chloe is also someone who has gone through her own problems.

She has gone through her own drug abuse issues. Like me, she’s in recovery. We decided to start a recovery center so that people like us would have a second chance.

If not for our own recovery, we would not begin to recover the new water. We will not live a blessed life with our three daughters.

As a CEO, you are an entrepreneur in a sense. What are some steps companies should take to make mental health a priority?

This is a great question. Whether they are corporate leaders or small business owners, business leaders must understand How important is mental health?. I think it starts with knowing what the signs and symptoms of common mental disorders are out there.

For example, a person may not care about his appearance. They may have poor health habits, and not look as good as they usually do. If you match that up with being in a bad mood and having low productivity, you know something has happened.

I think it is critical that business leaders learn more about identifying the symptoms and signs of potential mental stress. This way, they can educate their employees to get to know it themselves. They want to make sure everyone is mentally okay.

If they notice that something is not right, they want to be able to raise their concerns without repercussions. They want someone to get the help they need quickly before things go wrong.

What is the best way companies can address mental health issues affecting their employees?

I would say that someone within the company is giving a presentation on mental health issues in the workplace. It could also be someone with a mental health organization who gives the presentation to business leaders and their employees.

They can talk about what kind of mental problems there are and how to treat them. The presentation should also remind people that it’s okay to be dissatisfied. Employers should also have strategies in place in which they can speak confidently to employees who are dealing with potential mental health issues.

I highly recommend employers to make contact with local mental health professionals. I think having these people in your network will be essential. This way, if they or one of their employees need mental health services, they will have contact information at their fingertips.

This will definitely make the employer more resourceful as to how they can help their employees.

What do you think are common signs of mental health problems in the workplace?

I think the most serious problem is that someone does not attend frequently. They may call out sick or not show up without a prior phone call. They may be isolated to the extent that they are not allowed to leave their home.

If they appear, they may be in a bad mood. They may be sad, nervous, or dealing with some sort of mood swings. Also, if their productivity suffers along with the signs they are dealing with, it can be cause for concern.

Again, I think it is very important that the business owner needs to identify at least the basic signs related to mental problems. They don’t have to be adept at spotting it. They should know just enough to say “Okay, something isn’t right. Let’s see what happens.”

Once they are able to identify what could be a potential mental health issue, they can refer their employee to a professional.

What do you think should be done to prevent mental health problems?

Believe it or not, most mental health problems can start due to work-related stress. For this reason, I encourage employers to consider taking the necessary measures. One example is creating a work-life balance that works for all employees.

The point is that you don’t want your employees to work more than they can handle. Doing so will lead to stress and fatigue. Too much of that can lead to fatigue that can eventually lead to mental problems.

What makes this even better is that remote work can be an option. This is assuming the company has the infrastructure for it. I also think it can reduce the stress of commuting from home to office.

Think about it, by the time a person gets to the office, they are likely to be nervous. Same deal when they go home. If telecommuting isn’t out of the question, I think I’d encourage employers to consider this idea.

I also encourage business leaders to inform and inform their employees that overwork should not be recommended. I understand that there are business goals that must be met. There are deadlines that must be met, too.

However, I believe mental health should remain a priority. No need to work extra hours if you don’t want to. You can go home, spend time with the family, come back tomorrow and pick up where you left off.
