Man United star Bruno Fernandes explains arguments with Harry Maguire and Terrell Malacia

Malacia was mad at me and didn’t understand… ‘Catch the ball’ Maguire shouted and I said ‘Don’t scream!’ Bruno Fernandes explains his ranks on the pitch with his Man United teammates – but insists he doesn’t wave his hand!

  • Bruno Fernandes was criticized for his negative body language last season
  • This came as Man United struggled under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick
  • But the Portuguese star insists he has never been negative towards his teammates
  • He explained how Tyrell told Malacia to publish the play in Leicester
  • He apologized to Harry Maguire after telling him not to yell at him

Bruno Fernandes explained his heated debates on the field with Harry Maguire and Terrell Malacia while insisting that his body language is never negative on the pitch.

The Portuguese star often cut a frivolous figure during Manchester United’s 2021-22 season, which saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacked and the team drifted under interim manager Ralph Rangnick.

But Fernandez, who has returned to near his best under Erik ten Hag, says that has never been the case.

Tell athlete: The thing people say about how I wave my arm to my teammates. This never happened. This is a complete lie.

I can use my arms to ask for the ball and tell them something about where to move the ball. But I never talk to them in a bad way.

‘Yeah, I can yell at someone if he doesn’t pass the ball when he should, if he doesn’t make the decision in the best way, or if he goes twice against one and doesn’t pass the ball to his teammate. Then it is normal to be angry with him.

Fernandes cited two examples of heated conversations during United’s matches. One of them was with left-back Terrell Malacia, a summer newcomer to Old Trafford, during the 1-0 win over Leicester earlier this month.

The playmaker told Malacia to raise his head and look for passing options because he was in an empty space on the other side of the court.

He was mad at me because I was talking to him. Fernandez said, but he didn’t understand what I was saying.

Fernandes went to Malacia at the end of the match to reassure him that he wasn’t yelling “in a bad way” just asking him to switch play.

There was another occasion during the 2019-20 Europa League quarter-final against Copenhagen, when Maguire yelled at Fernandes for losing the ball when he tried to face an opponent rather than clear the ball.

I lost the ball and he shouted at me, “Bruno, catch the ball!”. I got tired and said: Don’t scream! Fernandez remembers.

“The first half of overtime, I went up to him and said ‘sorry for the reply’.
