The Aga Khan Team and its coach Jean-Claude Roget will take time to digest Vedinithird behind Luxembourg and Onesto at Leopardstown, but persistent doubts about his stamina mean the chances of a rift in his Qatar Arc de Triomphe Award have retreated.

Racing director George Remo said he was very satisfied with Leopardstown’s bid for the double set winner on Saturday, especially since Christophe Sommillon was forced to switch Fadini inside as the options for him in second place disappeared.

“We were happy with the way he ran,” said Remo. “He didn’t seem to like the ground. The way the race went off meant he had to take a challenge indoors as the ground was undoubtedly slower, having had to cross behind the other runners.

“None of that helped, but he ran really well after a break between the eclipse and the Irish champion. As a team, we’ll sit down and analyze the race, but I think he ran very well.”

Vadeni was fired from the favorites 7-4 to add the Irish champion to his victories at the Prix du Jockey Club and Coral-Eclipse.

While Arc hasn’t been completely discounted, Rimaud made it clear that other options including Qipco Champion Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Turf could be higher in Churchill’s son’s priority order, if he returns again this year.

“Nothing is doomed and nothing is ruled out,” said Remo. “We will see how the horse gets out of the race and Jean-Claude never makes a quick assessment.

“There are Champion Stakes and the Arc isn’t really under consideration right now, since there has to be some doubt about his stamina. We’ll put all of that into the mix when making a decision.

“Everything is still possible but there is no concrete plan at the moment. There is Keeneland although there is a matter of a mile and a half there as well.”

Rimaud admitted that the grounds in Leopardstown may have played a factor in whether Vadeni really saw the 10 teams and felt they played a big part in trimming his bottom line.

He said: “You have to ask about his stamina given the speed he picked up when crossing behind the others on Saturday and there was a moment he was actually traveling.

“But then he found himself up against the railroad on the worst of the land and was never really able to stand up again.”

Raymaud added: “You always prefer to win but we were very satisfied with his performance and he was beaten by two very good horses and he will be a huge success.

Vadeni is the best priced 6-1 for the Champion Stakes while the bow rates are between 9-1 and 18-1.
