Son Heung-min will undoubtedly return to his best at Spurs, but he hasn’t adapted well to Richarlison’s arrival, one critic claims.
Son has maintained his status as a killer asset for Tottenham since his 2015 move from Bayer Leverkusen. South Korea’s partnership with Harry Kane up front, in particular, has continued to thrive.
But Tottenham manager Antonio Conte seemed to add to the double threat in successive transfer window. In January, Dejan Kulusevsky arrived from Juventus and settled in impressively.
This summer, meanwhile, Richarlison signed from Everton and made an impact as well. In fact, Kulusevsky’s place against Fulham started on Saturday, Help Pierre-Emile Hojberg before a goal was disqualified.
Son has also made an assist this season, but has yet to find the scoring record after picking up a share of the Premier League Golden Boot award last season.
And former Tottenham player Paul Robinson admitted that Conte now has a “real problem” in his attacking ranks. He added that Son needs to hurry up with his new teammate.
“The manager has a real problem though,” Robinson said. football inside.
“We know Son doesn’t play as much as he can. He didn’t take up Richarlison’s challenge well. I think he got into his shell a little bit rather than embracing the competition.
“I don’t think he likes being brought in after 70 minutes. He likes the comfort of knowing he’s going to play the whole game.”
Son Heung-min will improve at Tottenham
However, Robinson backed Son to find his scoring touch again and put his current problems behind him.
“I think we’ll have a better son in the following weeks because Kulusevsky was given up instead of a son to make room for Richarlison,” The expert said.
“The manager has a real problem with the choice now because Richarlison has proven to be as good, if not better, than he started.
“It’s only a matter of time for Son. He hit the crossbar, scored an offside goal and earned the coach’s confidence.”
Son has scored 131 goals in 331 games for Tottenham so far in his career.
Tottenham star needs focus amid Richarlison battle
His son has proven it before and will prove it again – this drought won’t last long.
In the 2020/21 season, Son actually went seven matches in the Premier League without a goal. He ended that drought conclusively by four strokes in the final eight games of the season.
Looking back, Son was unable to find the net in six consecutive Premier League games in the 2019/20 season. However, he answered with two out of two.
He achieved the same result after missing five games without a goal later that season as well.
As such, Son has proven that – like all good strikers – he can weather adversity when they arise.
Conte’s additions to Kulusevsky and Richarlison could end up being a masterstroke, anyway. Son and Kane have been relied upon throughout the Spurs’ goals-scoring period, hence their importance.
So the extra competition is healthy to help lighten the load on the duo.
But a battle of more minutes will also cause Son or one of the others to lose their starting position – and they will likely go through these exercises in terms of form. This will make them hungrier to score more goals and help the team win more matches.
All in all, Son just needs to stay focused and know his chances will come. The Champions League is coming up for Tottenham and Son might think this presents a powerful opportunity to end the drought.
