Dr. Thejaswini says, “Yeast infections in the vagina are caused by the overgrowth of the Candida fungus due to extreme hormonal fluctuations in the body.”

Estrogen in particular is responsible for the overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans,” she says. cause yeast infections. Sometimes, a sample of cells from the affected area is sent to a lab for testing, especially if you have frequent yeast infections. “Infections like this can usually be treated with over-the-counter antifungal medications,” says Dr. Tejaswini. “You can prescribe ointments, creams, suppositories, or even oral antifungal medications for a certain number of days.”

Apart from this treatment, you can control or reduce your chance of getting a vaginal infection by paying attention to menstrual hygiene and keeping your vagina clean and fresh.

Here’s how to treat an infection during periods:

1. Take probiotics: If you are prone to yeast infections, you can try increasing your intake of probiotic foods, such as yogurt, to help the many good bacteria.

2. Change your underwear daily: Always wear clean underwear and don’t wear wet or sweaty clothes for a long time.

3. Changing sanitary pads from time to time: Wearing sanitary pads, menstrual cups, and tampons can lead to infection. Change the pad and tampons after at least 5-6 hours and make sure you clean your period cup properly.

4. Avoiding rashes: Menstrual cycles sometimes cause a rash. Try to avoid it by using the ointment and changing the pillow from time to time Reduce the risk of infection.

5. Stay hydrated: It is the most important thing to consider. Staying hydrated helps flush out toxins and bacteria and maintains a pH balance as well.
